Picture of Heat Rash

Heat rash is basically exactly what it seems - a rash that occurs in the heat. It is most common in the summer and in hot places in the world. Heat rash is also called miliaria. There are a couple of different types of heat rash. picture of heat rash

  • miliaria crystalline
  • miliaria rubra
  • miliaria profunda
  • miliaria pustulosa
  • postmiliarial hypohidrosis
  • tropical anhidrotic asthenia
  • occlusion miliaria

The most common type of heat rash is miliaria crystalline. Heat rash is caused by the clogging of the sweat gland ducts by dead skin cells. It can also be caused by Staph infection, which is a bacteria. The dead skin cells clog the duct, and when the glands produce sweat, it has no where to go. It can cause inflammation of the skin around the duct, and cause redness to the area. This leads to blisters, rash and itching. People who have heat rash also complain of an intense prickling feeling.

People who have heat rash are also at risk for heat exhaustion. This is because they are unable to sweat due to their sweat glands being clogged. This happens rarely and will only occur if the person does not attempt to cool themselves down, but continues to do activities that cause them to sweat and become overheated.

The second most common type of heat rash is miliaria profunda. This is often called Wildfire and is the most sever form of heat rash. It rapidly spreads and causes sever burning of the skin. This is usually because of chronic miliaria rubra. The clog in this type of heat rash is deep within the sweat gland duct. This causes the sweat to leak into the deep layers of the skin. As opposed to miliaria rubra, there is no redness involved with miliaria profunda, but there is a much higher risk of heat exhaustion.

Heat rash is mostly common in children and babies. This is because their sweat glands have not completely matured yet. Although heat rash is common in young people, anyone can get it. They commonly occur in the face, neck, under the breasts, in skin folds, where the skin rubs against clothing. The best way to prevent heat rash is to keep yourself cool. Stay air conditioned and avoid activities that will cause you to sweat. It is recommended to stay inside on hot and humid days especially and wear light clothing to prevent irritation. You can also take frequent cool showers.

When you start to experience heat rash for the first time, you should see a doctor. A doctor isn't necessarily needed for every episode, and it will usually clear up on its own after you experience it. Sometimes using antibacterial soap will make the heat rash clear up much faster and reduce the symptoms. You can also use anti-itch creams and lotions to soothe the itching.
